Trident Hurricane CAT 5 wet look urethane paver sealer kit

Best Paver Sealer for Canadian Freeze-Thaw Winters

Update: Trident CAT 4 has been discontinued and is no longer stocked by StoneSealer Canada. For a 2-part urethane with colour enhancement, gloss and joint stabilization, use Trident Hurricane CAT 5.

The best paver sealer for Canadian freeze-thaw winters is one that keeps water and de-icing salt out while letting the pavers breathe, and that matches the look you want. For enhanced, glossy pavers with hardened joints, choose a 2-part urethane such as Trident Hurricane CAT 5; for an invisible, natural finish, choose a penetrating silane/siloxane such as Break Wall.

What does a paver sealer need to survive a Canadian winter?

Pavers fail in Canada for predictable reasons. Water soaks into the paver and the joints, freezes, expands and thaws, dozens of times a season. Road salt and de-icers ride in on that water. Snow ploughs and shovels scrape the surface, and spring melt washes out joint sand.

A sealer that works here should do most of the following:

  • Reduce water absorption so less water is available to freeze inside the paver.
  • Resist salt and de-icers, or block their entry.
  • Stay breathable enough that moisture vapour can escape instead of being trapped under a film.
  • Stabilize joint sand where washout, weeds and ants are a problem.
  • Resist mould, moss and algae, especially in coastal BC.

Which paver sealers do we recommend, and how do they compare?

These are the paver and concrete sealers we stock for exterior use. The descriptions below come from the manufacturers' product data.

Sealer Type Finish Joint stabilizing Key manufacturer claims
Trident Hurricane CAT 5 New-generation 2-part urethane, water based, film forming Deepest enhancement, wet look, high gloss Yes (Armor Bond) Ultra-durable protection; guards against salt and corrosives; antifungal; one 7 gal kit makes 15 gal ready to use (D1, more gloss and stronger joints) or 20 gal (D2, leaner economy ratio)
Trident Cyclone Water based, film forming Matte, natural look Yes Hardens joint sand; antifungal protects film from mould, moss and algae
Trident Break Wall Silane/siloxane penetrating, water based Invisible No Protects against water penetration, salt and freeze/thaw damage; no silicone or wax
AquaBlocka Water based, StoneSealer Canada Invisible No 0% VOC, made in Canada; currently Break Wall is being used as a direct replacement due to supply

The Trident film-forming sealers (CAT 5, Cyclone) are recommended by the manufacturer for professional installation.

Should you choose a penetrating or a film-forming sealer?

This is the first decision, and it is mostly about appearance and joints.

Choose a penetrating sealer (Break Wall) if:

  • You want the pavers to look unsealed.
  • The surface is broomed concrete, a driveway, stairs or a commercial entrance where salt is the main threat.
  • Joints are already in good shape, or the joints are not sand.

Choose a film-forming, joint-stabilizing sealer (Cyclone, CAT 5) if:

  • You want colour enhancement or a matte "clean" look.
  • Joint sand washout, weeds or ants are a problem.
  • You want a surface that is easier to clean and resists staining.

How do you choose between CAT 5 and Cyclone?

  1. Decide on sheen. Matte: Cyclone. Gloss with enhancement and maximum wet look: CAT 5.
  2. Consider the surface. Enhancement depends on the paver. Do a test patch; Trident notes the extent of enhancement depends on the surface.
  3. Consider traffic and exposure. Driveways that see salt, tires and ploughs benefit from the 2-part urethanes, which Trident describes as guarding against salt and corrosives.
  4. Consider joints. All three harden joint sand. Use a clean, dry jointing sand such as Trident SEK.
  5. Consider who is applying it. These are pro products. Homeowners should hire a trained installer.

How does freeze-thaw affect the sealing process itself?

Your sealer is only as good as its installation, and Canadian weather narrows the installation window.

  • Temperature. Follow the application temperature range on the TDS, including overnight lows during the cure period.
  • Moisture. Pavers must be dry. In BC fall and spring, that can mean waiting for a run of dry days.
  • Efflorescence. Remove it first, or you will lock it under the film. Use EffBOMB.
  • Season. Late spring through early fall is the realistic sealing season in most of Canada.

How do you prepare pavers before sealing?

  1. Clean thoroughly with a surface cleaner and the right chemistry (EffBOMB for efflorescence and haze, GreaseGone MAX for oil, OxyShock MAX for organics).
  2. Remove old, failing sealer if present.
  3. Let the pavers dry completely.
  4. Re-sand joints with clean, dry jointing sand.
  5. Apply sealer per the TDS, at the right temperature, avoiding puddling.
  6. Protect from traffic and rain for the cure time on the TDS.

Is a made-in-Canada sealer better for Canadian winters?

AquaBlocka is made and packaged in Canada by StoneSealer Canada and formulated with Canadian weather in mind. Due to supply chain issues, Trident Break Wall is currently being used as a direct replacement. Both are invisible, water-based options for clients who want protection without changing the look.

What mistakes shorten the life of a paver sealer in Canada?

Most sealer complaints we hear from Canadian homeowners trace back to the job, not the jug. The common ones:

  1. Sealing too late in the year. A coat applied in October in Ontario or the Prairies may not get the warm, dry nights it needs to cure before the first frost. The result can be a soft or cloudy film that fails over winter.
  2. Sealing over dirty or salty pavers. Road salt residue, efflorescence and organic staining all sit under the film and either show through or weaken adhesion.
  3. Sealing wet pavers. In coastal BC, pavers can look dry on top and still be damp underneath after a week of rain. Trapped moisture is the main cause of white sealer.
  4. Over-applying. More sealer is not more protection. Thick coats puddle, blush and peel, especially in low spots where meltwater sits.
  5. Ignoring the joints. If the joint sand is low, dirty or washing out, a joint-stabilizing sealer cannot do its job. Re-sand first.
  6. Choosing the wrong look. A client who wanted a natural finish will not be happy with a high-gloss wet look, however durable it is. Always do a test patch and get sign-off.

What does a winter maintenance routine look like after sealing?

A sealer is one part of protecting pavers through a Canadian winter. Share this routine with clients:

  • Shovel or plough with care. Use a plastic blade or a plough shoe set slightly above the surface where possible.
  • Go easy on de-icers. Use the minimum needed and sweep up excess once the ice is gone.
  • Rinse in spring. A thorough rinse after the snow melts removes salt residue before it can work into the pavers.
  • Inspect each spring. Look for areas where water no longer beads, joint sand that has dropped, or white bloom returning. Address those early with a clean and, if needed, a maintenance coat.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sealer for pavers in Canada?

It depends on the look and the problem. For enhanced, glossy pavers with stabilized joints, Trident Hurricane CAT 5. For a matte look with hardened joints, Cyclone. For an invisible finish focused on water and salt, Break Wall.

Does sealing pavers prevent freeze-thaw damage?

Sealing reduces water and salt absorption, which reduces the main driver of freeze-thaw damage. Break Wall, for example, is described by Trident as protecting against water penetration, salt and freeze/thaw damage. Drainage and installation quality still matter.

Can homeowners apply CAT 5?

Trident recommends this 2-part sealer for professional use. Homeowners should hire a trained installer.

How often should pavers be resealed in Canada?

It depends on the product, traffic and exposure. Inspect each spring: if water no longer beads, or joints are washing out, plan a maintenance coat. Follow the TDS guidance.

Will sealer stop road salt damage?

A good sealer slows salt entry. CAT 5 is described as guarding against salt and corrosives, and Break Wall as blocking salt. Rinsing salt off in spring also helps.

Can I seal pavers in the fall?

Yes, if temperatures and dryness meet the TDS requirements through the cure period. In much of Canada, that window closes in early fall.
