Hi-Low Solutions Stripinator surface cleaner for stripping paver sealer

How to Strip Old Sealer from Pavers and Concrete

To strip old sealer from pavers or concrete, test a small area, apply a sealer stripper such as Trident Tidal Wave X, let it dwell until the sealer softens, agitate, then remove the softened sealer with a stripping surface cleaner and high pressure water. Rinse thoroughly, remove any efflorescence, let the surface dry completely, re-sand joints and reseal.

When do pavers and concrete need stripping?

You strip sealer when the existing film is failing and a new coat would only bury the problem. Common reasons:

  • Cloudy or white film that has not cleared (see our guide on why sealer turns white).
  • Peeling, flaking or patchy wear, especially in tire paths.
  • Yellowing or darkening of older sealers.
  • Changing systems, for example moving from a glossy film to a natural penetrating sealer.
  • Built-up coats that have become thick and uneven.

If the existing sealer is in good condition, a clean and maintenance coat is usually enough. Stripping is labour-intensive, so diagnose first.

What stripper should you use?

Trident Tidal Wave X is our go-to sealer stripper. According to Trident, it:

  • Strips acrylic, acrylic latex, polyurethane and other resin coatings and sealers.
  • Removes latex and oil-based paint spots.
  • Is ready to use; no dilution.
  • Is now a sprayable gel for convenience and cling.
  • Is natural and biodegradable; residue breaks down quickly in soil. Do not let product enter drains, sewers or waterways.
  • Is safe on most surfaces following a recommended pre-test.

What equipment do you need?

Item Why
Pump sprayer or gel sprayer To apply Tidal Wave X evenly
Stiff brush To agitate softened sealer, especially in textured areas
Stripping surface cleaner To lift softened sealer evenly without wand marks
Pressure washer (8 to 10 GPM for the Stripinator) Flow to drive the surface cleaner
Wet vac or containment To manage runoff away from drains
PPE: chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection Basic safety

The Hi-Low Solutions STRIPINATOR was designed specifically to strip paver sealer and can also tackle paint and line stripe removal. It has a custom aluminum dome and brush, Mosmatic swivel and Tornado bar, and four turbo nozzles, and works with 8 GPM or 10 GPM systems. HiLow recommends keeping four spare nozzles for long-term use. HiLow's own testing used dwell times of 30 to 60 minutes; experiment to find the best setting for the sealer you are removing.

How do you strip sealer, step by step?

  1. Check the weather. Work above freezing, out of hot direct sun if possible, with no rain forecast.
  2. Protect surroundings. Cover plants, block drains, mask siding, doors and garage seals.
  3. Do a test patch. Apply Tidal Wave X to a small area, wait, agitate and rinse. Note the dwell time that works.
  4. Apply the stripper. Spray an even, generous coat over a manageable section.
  5. Let it dwell. Keep it from drying out. Older or thicker films need longer.
  6. Agitate. Brush textured or heavily coated areas.
  7. Strip with the surface cleaner. Run the Stripinator in overlapping passes.
  8. Detail edges and joints. Use a wand on edges, steps and borders.
  9. Repeat where needed. Multi-coat films may need a second application.
  10. Rinse thoroughly. Remove all stripper and residue.
  11. Clean efflorescence. If white salts appear, treat with EffBOMB.
  12. Dry completely and re-sand. Then reseal.

How do you handle runoff responsibly?

Even biodegradable strippers should not go down storm drains. In most Canadian municipalities, storm drains flow to creeks and the ocean with minimal treatment.

  • Block storm drains before you start.
  • Direct runoff to landscaped areas only if the product label permits it, or collect it with a wet vac.
  • Remove paint and sealer solids for proper disposal.
  • Check your municipality's bylaws for wash water.

What should you reseal with?

Once stripped and dry, you get a fresh start. Pick based on the look the client wants:

Desired result Sealer
Natural, invisible Trident Break Wall
Matte with hardened joints Trident Cyclone
Deepest wet look, high gloss Trident Hurricane CAT 5

How does Canadian weather affect stripping?

  • Spring timing. Strip after snowmelt and once overnight frost is done, so you can reseal in the same window.
  • Cold slows chemistry. Dwell times typically need to be longer in cool weather; test.
  • Wet seasons. In BC, the hard part is drying the pavers after stripping. Plan for drying days between strip and reseal.
  • Road salt. Rinse driveways well; salt residues can interfere with a new coat.

How long does a stripping job take?

It depends on the area, the number of coats and the sealer type, so price by test patch, not by guesswork. As a planning guide, build the job in three parts:

  1. Day one: strip and rinse. Application, dwell, agitation and surface cleaning. Multi-coat or older urethane films may need two applications.
  2. Drying time. One or more dry days, depending on weather and the site. In BC fall and spring, this can be the longest part of the job.
  3. Final day: clean, sand, seal. Treat any efflorescence, re-sand the joints and apply the new sealer within its TDS window.

Tell the client up front that the drying gap is part of doing it properly.

What mistakes cause problems when stripping?

  • Letting the stripper dry out. It stops working and can leave residue. Work in sections and keep it wet.
  • Too much pressure. Turbo nozzles and high pressure on soft pavers or natural stone can etch the surface. Let the chemistry do the work.
  • Skipping the test patch. Every old sealer behaves differently.
  • Resealing too soon. Damp pavers after stripping are the fastest way to a white, failed new coat.
  • Forgetting the edges. Borders, steps and areas along the house often hold thicker sealer and need extra attention.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pressure wash sealer off pavers?

Pressure washing alone rarely removes a cured film evenly and can damage pavers. Use a stripper to soften the sealer first, then a surface cleaner.

What sealers does Tidal Wave X remove?

Trident states it strips acrylic, acrylic latex, polyurethane and other resin coatings and sealers, and removes latex and oil-based paint spots.

Do I need to dilute Tidal Wave X?

No. It is a ready-to-use formula.

How long should the stripper sit?

It depends on the sealer type, thickness and temperature. Do a test patch. HiLow's testing with the Stripinator used 30 to 60 minutes of dwell with a contractor grade stripper.

Will stripping damage my pavers?

Tidal Wave X is described as safe on most surfaces following a pre-test. Excess pressure is the bigger risk; use a surface cleaner and appropriate pressure.

How soon can I reseal after stripping?

Once the surface is clean, free of efflorescence and completely dry. Follow the TDS for the new sealer.

Where does the product information in this guide come from?

Product details, dilutions, dwell times and performance claims in this guide are taken from the manufacturers' product data and technical data sheets (TDS) as published on the linked StoneSealer Canada product pages (Trident Protects, DryTreat Stain-Proof, HiLow Solutions, Genuine Performance Machinery, ESTEAM, Scrubo, Rampage and StoneSealer Canada). Always read the current label, TDS and Safety Data Sheet before use, and test a small area first. Questions about your project? Email sales@stonesealer.ca.
